Peru Medical Missions a huge success at
Betesda Church
On June 2nd, a group of eight arrived in Peru to
help with a medical campaign at Betesda Church in La Legua,
Catacaos. Before heading off to Piura, the team stayed in Lima
and helped participate in health clinics sponsored by House of Hope
Ministries.
The group visited "Tesoros del Cielo" (Treasures
of Heaven) Church in Brisas del Norte their first Sunday here.
A few of the team members shared a briefs word and Tom Mitoraj gave
the message. The younger members of the team, helped Miriam
below with the children's service.
On Monday the team visited the center in Payet
"Nueva Generacion" (New Generation) and held the first of the health
clinics. They were joined by Dr. Venegas, a local Peruvian
dentist and Stacy Brinkley, a nurse from Richmond, VA. Stacy
has been staying in Peru for five months and she was responsable for
setting up these clinics.
The team visited, Ensenada and Brisas on Tuesday
and then finished up with the center in Collique on Wednesday morning. Later that
day we started on our 13 hour bus trip to Piura. Along for the
ride, were Pastor Julio Cavassa and his daughter Claudia, who helped
as one of our interpreters. Also, A.W. & Cheryl
Martin, Stacy Brinkley and Whitney McKinney came to help.
Whitney is studying Spanish back in the states and used this to gain
some "on hands" training being immersed in the language and culture
of Peru.
The Martin's are long time friends and a part of
the House of Hope board of directors in the states. They have
been to Peru well over ten times and have been here since January of
this year. We were glad to have the extra help.
Upon arriving in Piura, the team had an off day to
get some rest and organized for the coming week. Friday had us
visiting the church and getting things in order for the
campaign. Some of the team went and passed out flyers
throughout the neighborhood, inviting people to the
campaign.
Being that this was the first
campaign held at the church, we really didn't know what to
expect. Come Saturday morning the first day we saw over 150
people. With only two medical staff on hand, we we able to see
everyone who came. Tom and Judy were kept busy all day, so
much that they stayed an extra two hours to make sure everyone was
seen by a doctor.
Sunday we had even more people waiting for us when
we arrived at the church. We saw 179 people that day and again
the medical crew stayed until the last person was seen. Monday
and Tuesday we not as busy, since most of the children had
classes.
One of the medical team, Judy Heiler, took a nasty
fall on Tuesday morning and had to sit out the rest of the
day. It was hard to keep her down as she wanted to treat more
people. Stacy pitched in and helped and we were able to see
every person who came that day. I wanted Judy and her husband
to fly back to Lima, but Judy insisted in travelling with the team
back to Lima in the bus.
Wednesday I took the team to Catacaos to do a
little shopping. One of the team members, Paul Riley, had been
to Peru about 40 years ago and was able to contact a friend so they
could meet. He went to Chiclayo to visit his friends and then
would be heading back to the states on the 21st. We left later
that evening to return to Lima. We spent Thursday taking in
the downtown and doing a little shopping. That evening we had
a nice dinner together and shared some of our expierences of the
past weeks.
Friday saw the group pack up at
11:00am and head to the airport. We were blessed by team and I
know they recieved as well. Already some in the group are
talking about returning.
Speaking for myself and the members of Betesda
Church, we want to thank each and everyone of the team members for
the hard work they showed during their stay. You will not be
forgotten.
